Police intensify frisking across valley

IED recovered, destroyed along NH in Tappar

Srinagar, Jan 20: Ahead of Republic Day Celebrations, Jammu and Kashmir Police Tuesday intensified frisking and checking operations across valley parts.

Witnesses told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that police teams were deployed in and around the main Sopore town, including the busy Iqbal Market, vital road crossings and the Sopore railway station, where thorough checking of vehicles and pedestrians was carried out.

Similar reports were received from other areas of Baramulla, Kupwara and Anantnag districts.

Eyewitnesses informed that during the frisking operations, security personnel stopped and checked private and passenger vehicles. “Pedestrians were also being frisked and their identity cards were being verified. Nakas were laid at several entry and exit points.”

Officials said the intensified checking is part of the heightened security drill put in place to ‘ensure peaceful and incident-free celebrations of Republic Day.’

Pertinently, the exercise comes on a day when security forces recovered an improvised explosive device (IED) from Tappar village along the Srinagar–Baramulla National Highway on Tuesday morning.

The suspected device was detected during a routine sanitisation and checking operation that was later destroyed on the spot by a bomb disposal squad without causing any damage or injury, officials added.

Official while talking to KNO, assured peaceful Republic Day celebrations. “The security arrangements are intact and they are ready to face any eventuality.” (KNO)
