77th R-Day: Celebrating Our Republic, Standing By Our Promise
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterWhatsapp

On our 77th Republic Day, the real meaning of the day is bigger than the big parade in Delhi. It is about promising again to live by our Constitution—a set of rules for our country that promises every person justice, freedom, equality, and brotherhood. In Jammu and Kashmir, this day feels even more important. It reminds everyone that this region is a strong and vital part of India’s democracy. The real spirit of the day is in the people. The police chief of Kashmir invited families and school children to come and join the celebrations. This is a very good step. It shows that real safety comes when people feel involved and trusted. Seeing people practice for parades in all districts shows that the idea of India is alive in our hearts. Students performing dances and songs, showing love for the country and for local culture, is a perfect example of our national motto: “unity in diversity”. When the Lieutenant Governor takes the salute in Jammu, and the Chief Minister does it in Srinagar, it shows our political system is working as the Constitution planned. However, Republic Day must also be a day of reflection and renewed commitment. The constitutional promises of socio-economic justice and a dignified life are a continuous work in progress. The journey towards a more perfect union demands that we bridge gaps in development, ensure equitable opportunities for the youth of Jammu & Kashmir as for all Indians, and strengthen the bonds of mutual respect. This January 26th, let’s celebrate with more than just flags and parades. Let’s make a promise together. A promise to stand by the values of our Constitution, to work for a future where every single citizen, in every corner of India, feels secure in their rights and feels they truly belong. That is the best way to honour our Republic.
