SRINAGAR, FEBRUARY 06:  Social Welfare Department (SWD) Srinagar Friday organized an awareness-cum-sensitization programme under the Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana (AVYAY) at the Narwara Community Hall, Eidgah, to educate senior citizens and the general public about laws, rights, entitlements and welfare services available for the elderly.

The programme aimed to create awareness about the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, various social security schemes, healthcare facilities, old age homes, legal aid provisions and other government support mechanisms for senior citizens.

Participants were sensitized about grievance redressal mechanisms, dedicated helplines and services being provided under AVYAY, along with other centrally sponsored and UT-level schemes.

Officers from the Social Welfare Department, subject experts from IMHANS and legal background emphasized the importance of dignity, care and protection of elderly persons, while highlighting the crucial role of families and society in ensuring a safe, secure and respectful environment for senior citizens. The event witnessed the participation of nearly 200 senior citizens.

The Department reiterated its commitment to strengthening social support systems, promoting active ageing and ensuring that senior citizens are fully aware of their rights and are able to access government services without difficulty.
