Srinagar, Feb 14: Shopian is all set to host the second edition of the much-anticipated Winter Carnival at Dubjan Meadow on Monday.

According to the details available, the event is being organized by the Tourism Department in collaboration with the Shopian administration.

It aims to boost winter tourism in the region by highlighting the natural beauty and rich cultural heritage of South Kashmir. Surrounded by snow-covered landscapes, Dubjan is expected to transform into a vibrant hub of celebration, adventure, and tradition for the day-long carnival.

An Official of the Tourism Department told KNO that the carnival will offer a wide range of attractions including snow activities, fun-filled snow games, colourful cultural performances, traditional Kashmiri music, local cuisine stalls, departmental exhibitions, and various recreational events.

“The objective is not only to attract tourists during the winter season but also to create livelihood opportunities for local artists, artisans and vendors,” he said. “Dubjan has immense tourism potential, especially in winter, and such initiatives help put it on the tourism map,” the official added.

Locals are eagerly awaiting the festival, calling it a much-needed push for the area’s economy.

“We are very happy that the government is focusing on Dubjan. During winters, business usually slows down, but such carnivals bring visitors and help us earn,” said Ghulam Hassan, a tea stall owner from a nearby village.

Another resident, Farooq Ahmad, who runs a small handicraft shop, said the carnival provides a rare platform for locals to showcase their products. “Tourists love our handmade items and local food. Events like this help preserve our culture while supporting our families,” he added.

Young residents are equally excited about the snow sports and cultural programs. “We usually travel far to enjoy winter festivals. Having one here in Shopian is special and will attract people from other districts too,” said college student Aijaz Ahmad.

The district administration has assured adequate arrangements regarding safety, traffic management, and basic facilities to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for visitors.

With scenic snowfall, cultural vibrancy, and community participation, the Dubjan Winter Carnival is expected to emerge as a signature winter tourism event in Shopian, strengthening the region’s growing reputation as a year-round tourist destination—(KNO)
