Pulwama gets respite, NH-444 link road thrown open

Locals hail long-awaited connectivity, say it’ll ease traffic congestion, boost economic activity in south Kmr

Pulwama, Feb 16: In a major infrastructural milestone for south Kashmir, the long-pending NH-444 link road connecting Bonura to Gudoora in Pulwama district was opened for traffic on Monday.

As per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the opening of the highway will bring much-needed relief to thousands of daily commuters and would significantly reduce congestion in Pulwama town.

The newly operational stretch connects several key routes, including Rajpora Road, Shopian Road, Pakherpora Road and Rohmoo Road, effectively creating an alternative corridor for vehicles that earlier had no option but to pass through Pulwama’s overcrowded town centre. With this connectivity now in place, traffic is being smoothly diverted, easing pressure on internal roads that routinely witnessed long jams, particularly during peak hours.

Residents from Pulwama town and surrounding villages described the development as a “game changer” for daily life.

“For years we have suffered massive traffic congestion, especially in the mornings and evenings,” said Mohammad Yousuf, a shopkeeper at Bonura crossing. “With this NH-444 link finally open, vehicles are flowing smoothly from the very first day. It is a huge relief for traders, commuters and pedestrians alike.”

Another resident, Mudasir Ahmad from Newa, highlighted the impact on emergency services and overall mobility.

“Earlier ambulances would often get stuck in town traffic, sometimes for several minutes. Now movement is much faster and safer. This road has truly improved accessibility,” he said.

Women commuters and office-goers also welcomed the shorter travel time.

Rehana Jan, a school teacher who travels daily toward Pulwama town, said the new route has cut her commute considerably.

“It saves nearly 15 minutes each way. For people who travel daily, this is a big improvement. It also feels safer as traffic is more organized now,” she added.

Locals noted that the road will benefit not only Pulwama but also residents traveling toward Shopian and To Srinagar, allowing them to bypass congested areas and reach their destinations without unnecessary delays.

Beyond easing congestion, traders believe the improved connectivity will give a boost to local commerce and transportation of goods.

“With direct access to the highway, movement of fruits, vegetables and other supplies will become faster and cheaper. This will help both farmers and shopkeepers,” said a local trader.

People also appreciated the efforts of the district administration and the executing agencies for completing the long-awaited project, urging authorities to ensure regular maintenance, proper signage and safety measures, especially during the winter season.

The opening of the NH-444 Bonura–Gudoora stretch has been widely welcomed as a timely and people-friendly initiative, expected to transform traffic management in Pulwama town while improving connectivity and economic prospects across the district. (KNO)
