BJP MLAs protest, seek varsity in Jammu

Jammu, Feb 18: The Jammu & Kashmir Assembly was adjourned on Wednesday after BJP MLAs protested against police action on students who were protesting to demand the establishment of a National Law University in Jammu.

As per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the House witnessed uproar during the discussion on grants of departments headed by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, with BJP MLAs protesting the alleged use of force by police against the students.

Carrying placards that read “NLU for Jammu,” the BJP MLAs raised slogans, demanding the university in Jammu.

Mubarak Gul, who was in the Chair, directed the BJP MLAs to refrain from displaying placards inside the House.

As BJP MLAs disrupted proceedings, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary accused them of enacting drama to mislead the people of Jammu.

“Where did these banners come from? They are staging drama here. They cannot be sympathisers of the people,” he said.

NC MLA Nazir Gurezi dared BJP legislators to stage a protest outside the office of the Lieutenant Governor against police action on students.

“If you have courage, then protest outside the Governor’s office. Tell the Governor why our children were baton-charged,” he said.

As BJP MLAs continued their protest, Gul adjourned the House. (KNO)
