Pahalgam attack tested us all: Satish Sharma

Gulmarg, Feb 23: Asserting that Jammu and Kashmir would give a strong response to terrorism, Sports Minister Satish Sharma on Monday said that the region will continue to promote tourism and sports as key drivers of growth.

Addressing the gathering during the inaugural ceremony of the Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG) 2026 here, Sharma said, “The KIWG symbolises resilience and confidence at a time when Jammu and Kashmir is overcoming challenges.”

“Last year’s Pahalgam attack tested the resolve of the people and the administration,” he said, adding, “Such challenges won’t deter efforts to promote tourism and sporting activities across the region.”

“We are strong enough to face challenges. Tourism will thrive and sports will lead positive change,” the Minister said, adding that Jammu and Kashmir remains committed to peace, development and youth engagement.

He described hosting the sixth edition of the Khelo India Winter Games as an honour, stating that the event celebrates not only sporting excellence but also the spirit and resilience of the people.

He said Gulmarg has emerged as a vibrant winter sports hub, attracting athletes and tourists from across the country.

Highlighting government initiatives, the minister said investments are being made to strengthen sports infrastructure and nurture local talent in disciplines such as skiing and snowboarding.

He added that winter adventure tourism is being expanded to other destinations including Sonamarg, Bhaderwah and areas across the Pir Panjal region.

The Minister said promotion of homestays in rural and high altitude areas is also being prioritised to ensure local communities benefit directly from tourism growth.

Referring to security concerns, Minister Sharma said Jammu and Kashmir will continue to move forward despite threats. “Tourism represents peace and progress. Sports and tourism together will play a major role in shaping the Union Territory’s economic future.”

Minister Sharma said the ongoing Khelo India Winter Games reflect Jammu and Kashmir’s growing sporting culture and collective resolve to promote youth engagement through sports, while stressing the need to fight drug abuse through sustained athletic participation.

He said timely snowfall this year helped ensure smooth conduct of the games and announced that future editions may be scheduled based on snowfall conditions rather than fixed dates to maximise participation and sporting experience.

The Minister said more than 1,000 athletes from various states are taking part in the games, calling it a strong message of normalcy and national integration.

He credited the administration, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and officials involved in organising the event.

Sharma said that sports remain the most effective tool to steer youth away from drug abuse and called for collective responsibility to rehabilitate affected youngsters.

He termed those involved in drug trafficking as “traitors” and urged strict social and institutional action against them.

Stressing the role of media, Minister said responsible reporting can help strengthen social awareness and support youth development initiatives—(KNO)
