Students debate democratic values

BANDIPORA, FEBRUARY 26: HKM Government Degree College (GDC) Bandipora, designated as the District Nodal College, Thursday successfully hosted the District-Level Viksit Bharat Youth Parliament-2026, providing a vibrant platform for students to deliberate on democratic values and contemporary issues concerning the nation.

The programme, as per an official statement, witnessed enthusiastic participation of students from various colleges of the district, including GDC Hajin, GDC Sumbal, GDC Ajas and the host institution. The deliberations were held on the theme “50 Years of Emergency: Lessons for Indian Democracy,” encouraging young participants to reflect upon the historical significance of the emergency period and its relevance in strengthening democratic institutions.

Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Bandipora, Nizam Uddin Bhat, who was the Chief Guest on the occasion, appreciated the college for organizing the event and emphasized the importance of youth participation in democratic processes. He highlighted that such platforms help nurture informed, responsible and vigilant citizens capable of contributing positively towards nation-building.

Earlier, Principal HKM GDC Bandipora, Prof. Suresh Kumar Dogra, in his welcome address, underscored the significance of Youth Parliament in fostering leadership qualities, critical thinking and awareness among students, while encouraging them to actively engage in democratic discourse.

During the event, over 30 students delivered insightful and thought-provoking speeches, showcasing their oratory skills and understanding of democratic principles. The performances were evaluated by a distinguished jury.

Following detailed evaluation, the jury selected the top ten performers who will represent district Bandipora at the State-Level Youth Parliament. The winners were felicitated with certificates of merit by the dignitaries in recognition of their outstanding performance.
