Energy Emergency: ‘9.5 billion units power gap looms over J&K, Ladakh’

Srinagar, Mar 05: In the coming ten years Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are unlikely to meet 9.5 Billion Units (BU) of electrical energy requirement considering the existing and planned capacity contracts.

The official documents available with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) reveal that, “Considering the existing and planned capacity contracts, the UTs will not be able to meet its electrical energy requirement and the total unserved energy for the year 2035-36 has been estimated as 9.5 BU.”

The study has been carried out considering only the existing and planned capacity contracts as per J&K State Load Despatch Centre (SLDC).

“The study has also analyzed the daily and monthly pattern of unserved energy in the year 2035-36 and it can be seen that contracted capacity including the existing and planned is unable to meet the projected electricity demand,” it reads.

The document further said that the total unserved energy in the year 2035-36 is expected to be about 9.5 BU which is about 29% of the annual projected electrical energy requirement during the year 2035-36.

It also said that the unmet demand occurs during both solar and non-solar hours throughout the year.

Pertinently, KNO in September-2025 had reported that Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh is likely to witness an energy deficit ranging from more than 4,200 Megawatts (MWs) to 10,000 MWs in next ten years.

In the month of April-2025, the news agency has reported that Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh is likely to witness around 62 percent of share from non-fossil fuel-based capacity in mixed electricity generation by 2034-35.

“The share of non-fossil fuel-based capacity in the generation mix is projected to be around 62% by 2034-35 with higher contribution from non-fossil fuel-based capacities in alignment with Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) trajectory.” (KNO)
