MeT predicts erratic weather till Mar 19

Srinagar, Mar 11: Higher reaches of Kashmir received fresh snowfall while several plains experienced light rain over the past 24 hours, the Meteorological Department said on Tuesday.

The department, according to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), predicted that weather conditions across Jammu and Kashmir will remain erratic till March 19.

Light to moderate precipitation was recorded at several places across the Kashmir division during the last 24 hours ending at 8:30 am, the MeT said, adding that Gulmarg, Kupwara and other higher altitude areas received snowfall, while plains such as Srinagar, Pahalgam and parts of North Kashmir recorded light rainfall. Kupwara received about 6.4 mm of rain, Gulmarg recorded 2.8 mm, while Srinagar registered around 1.2 mm during the period.

Temperatures remained above normal in most places. Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 17.6°C on the previous day, around 2.9 degrees above normal, while the minimum temperature settled at 10.5°C, about 7.2 degrees above the seasonal average. Gulmarg recorded the lowest minimum temperature in Kashmir division at 2.4°C.

In Jammu division, Jammu city recorded a maximum temperature of 31.2°C, nearly 5.8 degrees above normal, with the minimum temperature settling at 19.9°C.

The weather office said generally cloudy conditions with light to moderate rain in plains and snowfall over higher reaches are likely at scattered to many places on March 11 and 12.

Weather is expected to remain generally dry on March 13 and 14.

Another spell of generally cloudy weather with light rain or snowfall in higher reaches is likely around the night of March 15 and morning of March 16 at scattered places, the MeT said.

It said isolated light precipitation may also occur on the night of March 17, while scattered rain or snowfall is possible again between March 18 and 19.

The MeT department has stated that temporary traffic disruptions may occur over higher reaches and important mountain passes due to precipitation.

Farmers have been advised to resume agricultural operations during the likely dry spell on March 13 and 14, the advisory said. (KNO)
