Kulgam, Mar 18: Late National Conference (NC) leader Wali Muhammad Itoo was fondly remembered on his 32nd death anniversary on Wednesday, with tributes pouring in from political leaders, workers, and locals across south Kashmir.

Speaking to reporters at DH Pora in Kulgam, his daughter and Minister for Health and Medical Education Department, Sakeena Itoo, said her father continues to live in the hearts of the people due to his unwavering commitment to public welfare.

“He dedicated his life to serving the people. Even today, the love and respect people have for him show that his legacy remains alive,” she said.

Recalling his contributions, Itoo said that although her father had a relatively short tenure as a minister, his work left a lasting impact on the region. “He did remarkable work in a limited time. Several important roads constructed during his tenure continue to benefit the public to this day,” she added.

Wali Mohammad Itoo, also a former Speaker of the J&K Legislative Assembly, was assassinated on March 18, 1994.

Meanwhile, taking a dig at critics, Minister Itoo said that some individuals indulge in baseless criticism on social media. “There are people who have little constructive work to do, so they resort to making unfounded allegations against us online,” she said.

Clarifying her recent remarks about private school teachers, Sakeena said her statements were misinterpreted and presented in a distorted manner.

She emphasised that both government and private educational institutions play a crucial role in shaping society.

“I firmly believe that both private and government schools contribute significantly. There are private schools with excellent infrastructure and highly qualified teachers, while some may lack in these aspects. The same applies to government schools as well,” she said.

Itoo said the teaching profession deserves respect irrespective of institutional affiliation or qualification levels. “Teachers, whether from government or private institutions, are the backbone of society. Their role in shaping future generations is invaluable, and they deserve utmost respect,” she added.

The commemorative event witnessed participation from party workers and locals who paid homage to the late leader, remembering his contributions to the development and welfare of the people in the region—(KNO)
