Srinagar, Apr 02: Jammu and Kashmir has a total of 291 electric vehicle public charging stations (EVPCS) installed across the Union Territory, the Government of India (GoI) informed the Lok Sabha on Thursday.

In a written reply to an unstarred question, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said that a total of 49,909 EV public charging stations have been installed across the country as of March 30, 2026.

The data, accessed by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), reveals that Jammu and Kashmir remains among the lower-ranked regions in terms of EV charging infrastructure when compared to states like Maharashtra (6,577), Karnataka (6,480), and Uttar Pradesh (4,214).

The minister further stated that setting up EV charging stations is an unlicensed activity, allowing private players to install and operate them as per guidelines issued by the Ministry of Power. Maintenance responsibility lies with the respective charge point operators.

As per official figures, Jammu and Kashmir has also witnessed gradual adoption of electric vehicles over the past three years. Around 1,834 electric two-wheelers were registered in 2023, which increased to 3,001 in 2024 before slightly declining to 2,495 in 2025. Till March 29, 2026, 545 such vehicles have been registered.

Similarly, registrations of electric four-wheelers in the Union Territory rose from 166 in 2023 to 430 in 2024 and further to 757 in 2025, while 184 vehicles have been registered so far in 2026.

However, the data shows a decline in electric bus registrations in the region, with 150 buses registered in 2023 and 50 in 2024, while no registrations were reported in 2025 and 2026 so far.

The government also informed that Rs 2,000 crore has been allocated under the PM E-DRIVE scheme for expansion of EV charging infrastructure across the country. Additionally, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has been tasked with developing a national mobile application for EV users, which will offer features such as charger location, real-time availability, slot booking, and digital payments.

The Centre added that it is promoting digital highway infrastructure, including FASTag and advanced traffic management systems, to support the growth of electric mobility and improve road safety. (KNO)
