Friday is not merely another day in the Islamic calendar. It is the weekly festival, the master of all days, and the spiritual pivot around which the Muslim week revolves. At its heart lies the khutbah—the sermon delivered before the congregational prayer. This is not a mere ritualistic address but a divinely ordained institution with profound spiritual, social, and moral significance. In an age of relentless distraction and moral fragmentation, the Friday sermon remains an indispensable tool for guiding the Muslim community towards righteousness. The Quran explicitly commands believers to prioritise the Friday call: “O you who have believed, when the call is proclaimed for prayer on Friday, then hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave aside trade. That is better for you, if you only knew” (62:9). This verse establishes the precedence of spiritual engagement over worldly commerce. The Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) set the highest standard for the khutbah. He would stand on the pulpit (minbar) and address the congregation on matters of faith, ethics, current challenges, and social justice. His sermons were not abstract theological lectures but practical guidance for navigating life. They addressed economic exploitation, warned against hypocrisy, reminded of accountability in the Hereafter, and urged kindness to neighbours and orphans. The khutbah was a mirror reflecting the community’s spiritual health and a compass pointing towards necessary reform. This Prophetic model carries urgent lessons for modern requirements. The Friday sermon cannot remain confined to repetitive themes that ignore the realities of contemporary Muslim life. The pulpit must address the challenges of our times: the dangers of social media addiction, the erosion of family values, financial ethics in a globalised economy, environmental stewardship, and the psychological pressures of modern living. The khutbah must be a source of unity, not division. It should heal wounds, not deepen them. In an era of polarised discourse, the imam’s words can bridge differences by emphasising shared Islamic values of justice, compassion, and mutual respect. It must counter extremist narratives by presenting the balanced, moderate understanding of Islam that the Prophet (PBUH) exemplified. The Friday sermon is a weekly lifeline. When delivered with sincerity, relevance, and wisdom, it can transform hearts, strengthen communities, and produce believers who navigate the complexities of modern life with faith as their anchor. It is, and must remain, the beating heart of the Muslim week.
