Rain, thunderstorms likely across J&K today: MeT

Srinagar, May 11: The Meteorological Department on Monday forecast light to moderate rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds across Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, while advising people to suspend boating and farm operations during the period.

The MeT department said the weather remained generally cloudy across many places on Monday with intermittent spells of rain and thundershowers.

It said similar weather conditions are likely to continue on Tuesday with one or two spells of light to moderate rain and thundershowers at most places.

“There is a possibility of hailstorm, thunder, lightning and gusty winds with speeds of 50-60 kmph at a few places in Kashmir and Jammu divisions, mainly during afternoon, evening and night hours,” the advisory, accessed by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said.

The department advised people to suspend boating and shikara riding during the afternoon and late afternoon hours in view of gusty winds over water bodies.

Farmers have been advised to suspend farm operations till May 13.

According to the MeT office, the weather is expected to remain partly to generally cloudy with brief showers from May 13 to 17, while light rain and thundershowers are likely at scattered places on May 18. From May 19 to 21, the weather is expected to remain partly to generally cloudy.

Meanwhile, Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 24.4 degrees Celsius on Monday, slightly above the normal of 24.3 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature settled at 14 degrees Celsius, 3.1 degrees above normal.

Qazigund recorded a maximum of 22.6 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 11.6 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam registered 20.2 degrees Celsius as the day temperature and 10.6 degrees Celsius during the night.

Kupwara recorded a maximum temperature of 24.2 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 11.3 degrees Celsius.

Gulmarg recorded a maximum of 15.4 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 5.4 degrees Celsius.

Jammu city recorded a maximum temperature of 33 degrees Celsius, which was 4.1 degrees below normal, while the minimum temperature settled at 20.2 degrees Celsius.

Banihal recorded 23 degrees Celsius, Batote 22.8 degrees Celsius and Katra 30.6 degrees Celsius as the maximum temperatures, the MeT data showed. (KNO)
