Friday Special: Hajj – A Journey Of Equality In A Divided World
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterWhatsapp

The annual pilgrimage of Hajj stands as the most profound expression of Islamic faith and human unity. In a world increasingly fractured by race, nationality, wealth, and power, Hajj delivers a timeless message: before God, all humans are equal. The significance of this pilgrimage is not confined to the 5th pillar of Islam; its relevance echoes loudly in the contemporary global landscape, offering solutions to some of humanity’s most persistent problems. The Quran commands those who are able to undertake this journey: “And proclaim to the people the Hajj; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every distant pass” (Quran 22:27). This divine proclamation was a revolutionary social announcement. It declared that the worth of a person is not in their lineage or bank balance but in their devotion. The central ritual of Hajj is standing at Arafat, where the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) delivered his final sermon. In that address, he dismantled the very foundations of racial superiority and class hierarchy, declaring: “There is no superiority of an Arab over a non-Arab, nor of a non-Arab over an Arab, nor of a white over a black, nor of a black over a white, except by piety.” In an era where cultures clash, Hajj serves as a living, breathing demonstration of interfaith and intercultural harmony, as millions of diverse skin colours and languages coexist in peace. Hajj is a powerful school of discipline and patience. The rigorous rituals—circumambulating the Kaaba, running between Safa and Marwa, and stoning the devil—demand physical endurance and mental fortitude. These acts strip away arrogance and cultivate humility, reminding the pilgrim that life is a test of submission to the Divine will. In today’s consumerist world, where materialism often overshadows spirituality, Hajj re-centres the believer’s purpose. It is a stark reminder that the ultimate destination is not a corporate boardroom or a luxurious home, but the Hereafter. By donning the simple two-piece white cloth (Ihram), the pilgrim symbolically sheds worldly attachments, signifying that death is the great equaliser. Thus, Hajj is not merely an ancient ritual. It is a dynamic, living call to action for humanity to abandon prejudice, embrace equality, and prioritise spiritual wealth over material accumulation. It is the ultimate antidote to the hatred and division plaguing our modern world.
