KUPWARA, MAY 22: Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kupwara, Shrikant Suse Friday chaired a meeting of the District Level NCORD (Narco Coordination) Committee to review and strengthen the measures being undertaken by various departments to curb drug abuse and narcotics-related activities across the district.

During the meeting, the DC, as per an official statement, conducted a comprehensive review of the ongoing enforcement, monitoring and preventive initiatives being implemented by the concerned departments. Stressing the need for a coordinated and proactive approach, he directed all stakeholders to intensify efforts for effective control of drug abuse and dismantling of narcotics networks in the district.

The Deputy Commissioner emphasized strict action against individuals found involved in drug peddling and substance abuse. He directed the concerned departments to initiate measures for cancellation of driving licences, gun licences and Aadhaar-related verifications of offenders as per the applicable provisions and procedures.

To strengthen surveillance and monitoring at the grassroots level, the Tehsildars were instructed to identify and closely monitor vulnerable areas and drug abuse hotspots within their jurisdictions. They were further directed to ensure the installation of CCTV cameras in all chemist shops to regulate the sale of medicines and prevent misuse of pharmaceutical drugs.

Highlighting the importance of community engagement and youth empowerment in combating drug addiction, the DC directed the concerned departments to expedite the development of playgrounds and libraries in all Panchayats under the NMJK Abhiyan. He stated that creating constructive recreational and educational avenues for youth is essential to steer them away from substance abuse and towards positive activities.

The meeting also witnessed a detailed discussion on several other preventive, enforcement and awareness measures aimed at eliminating the menace of drugs from the district. The DC stressed the importance of inter-departmental coordination, regular awareness campaigns and community participation to ensure a drug-free society.

Among others, the meeting was attended by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kupwara, Syed Al Tahir Gilani; SSP Handwara, Sahil Sarangal; Additional Deputy Commissioner Kupwara, Gulzar Ahmad Khan; Assistant Commissioner Revenue (ACR), Chief Education Officer (CEO), Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Lolab and other concerned officers.
