Srinagar, Jun 05: On the occasion of World Environment Day, National Conference (NC) President Dr Farooq Abdullah called for a renewed commitment to environmental protection, stressing that development and economic growth must go hand in hand with ecological sustainability.

Expressing concern over the growing impact of climate change and environmental degradation, Dr Farooq, according to a party statement issued here, said that unchecked deforestation, pollution, encroachment on natural habitats and the reckless exploitation of resources are posing serious threats to the fragile ecosystem of Jammu and Kashmir.

He noted that the region is already experiencing the consequences of global environmental neglect, including shrinking water bodies, erratic weather patterns, loss of biodiversity and the gradual disappearance of several plant and animal species.

“Development is essential for progress, but it should never come at the cost of our environment. We must reassess our priorities and adopt a model of sustainable development that protects nature while meeting the needs of our people,” Dr Abdullah said.

Describing Jammu and Kashmir’s natural beauty as one of its greatest strengths, the NC chief emphasised that preserving its forests, lakes, rivers and mountains is not only an environmental responsibility but also vital for the region’s cultural identity, tourism sector, and future generations.

The former chief minister urged the younger generation to take a leading role in environmental conservation through awareness campaigns, community initiatives, tree plantation drives, and responsible lifestyle choices. He called upon educational institutions, civil society organisations, and government agencies to work collectively towards building a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Jammu and Kashmir.

“Protecting the environment is not the responsibility of governments alone; it is a collective duty. Together, we can preserve the priceless natural heritage of Jammu and Kashmir and leave behind a greener future for our children,” Dr Farooq added.
