Muharram preparations initiated two months in advance: Minister Sharma

Srinagar, Jun 16: Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Satish Sharma on Tuesday said the Jammu and Kashmir government has made elaborate arrangements for the smooth and peaceful observance of Muharram, while appealing to people to uphold communal harmony, brotherhood and unity.

Speaking to reporters here, Sharma said preparations for Muharram were initiated nearly two months in advance, making it one of the earliest and most comprehensive planning exercises undertaken by the government.

He said a high-level review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was recently held with senior officers, stakeholders and legislators to assess preparedness and ensure all necessary facilities are put in place ahead of the religious occasion.

“The government has adequate stocks of essential commodities, including ration and LPG and additional supplies have also been procured to meet any increased demand,” Sharma said.

Addressing concerns regarding drinking water facilities during Muharram, the minister said large Syntex water tanks are being installed at important locations, while water tankers will also remain available to cater to public requirements. “Fire service vehicles will be deployed at key points as a precautionary measure,” he added.

Minister Sharma acknowledged challenges related to potholes and road repairs, stating that rising bitumen prices and supply constraints due to the prevailing geopolitical situation have impacted road maintenance works.

“Despite these challenges, we are making every effort to address road-related issues and improve conditions wherever possible within the available time,” he said.

Appealing for unity and brotherhood, Sharma said attempts are often made by divisive forces to create differences among communities, but such efforts must be rejected.

“We are one people and must remain united. We believe in the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, the world is one family. External and internal forces trying to divide society should not be allowed to succeed. Our collective responsibility is to strengthen unity and harmony,” he said.

Referring to the upcoming pilgrimage season, the minister said the government has also reviewed arrangements for the Kheer Bhawani Mela and the annual Amarnath Yatra.

Sharma said he would visit the Kheer Bhawani shrine on June 18 to inspect preparations and would subsequently review arrangements at Pahalgam and Sonamarg for the yatra.

Expressing optimism about the tourism sector, the minister said tourist arrivals in Jammu and Kashmir are witnessing a strong revival and described the current trend as highly encouraging. He urged people to maintain cleanliness and extend warm hospitality to visitors, adding that Jammu and Kashmir has a significant role to play in India’s growth and development.

“Tourism is steadily picking up and we must collectively ensure a welcoming environment for visitors. Jammu and Kashmir has an important contribution to make to India’s growth story,” the minister said—(KNO)
