Uproar in Assembly after Speaker rejects motion on disaster losses

Srinagar, Oct 28: The Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly witnessed uproarious scenes on Tuesday after Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather rejected an adjournment motion brought by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Pawan Kumar Gupta, seeking discussion on the impact of recent natural calamities.

As soon as proceedings began this morning, as per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Pawan Kumar Gupta, MLA Udhampur West, urged the Chair to suspend business and allow a debate on the recent calamities and other disasters in the region.

The Speaker ruled that the motion had been rejected in accordance with the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business of the Assembly.

He pointed out that the issue was already scheduled for discussion the following day. “You may discuss it throughout the day tomorrow,” the Speaker said.

A resolution submitted by Gupta on losses due to natural calamities has been listed in business of the House on Wednesday

The Speaker’s ruling triggered protests from BJP members, who raised slogans such as “Jammu Ke Sath Insaf Karo” (Do justice with Jammu). In retaliation, National Conference (NC) legislators countered with chants of “Statehood Ko Wapas Karo” (Restore statehood).

The Speaker made repeated appeals for order as the House descended into chaos. Rising from his chair, the Speaker urged lawmakers to maintain decorum.

The intervention from Leader of Opposition Sunil Kumar Sharma defused the standoff in the House. (KNO)
