Handwara, Jul 02: Peoples Conference (PC) on Thursday staged a massive protest rally in north Kashmir’s Handwara town over the alleged sidelining of MLAs by the NC-led government.

As per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), PC workers organized a large protest gathering against what they described as the weakening of the MLA’s role by the incumbent regime.

Chanting pro-PC and anti-NC slogans, party leaders including Sheikh Imran, Bashir Ahmad Dar, and Mansoor Banday marched through the streets of the town, protesting the exclusion of PC MLA Sajad Gani Lone from official functions in his constituency.

“They are eroding the institution of MLAs. The MLA is an institution. Omar Abdullah is crying that he doesn’t have powers and should be given statehood, but on the other hand he is conspiring to weaken MLAs,” State Secretary (Organisation) Sheikh Muhammad Imran told the protest rally.

He added that even the MLAs of the ruling party are being maltreated by the government. “His own MLAs didn’t participate in the programmes of the Deputy CM in Rajouri,” he alleged.

Last month, Lone, a vocal critic of the government, was not invited to a function organized for the inauguration of a bridge in his segment.

As per a circular issued by the General Administration Department in 2025, MLAs are to be invited to all official functions in their respective constituencies. (KNO)
