Srinagar, Jul 11: Once known primarily for their strategic importance, villages along the Line of Control (LoC) in North Kashmir are now drawing visitors eager to experience their pristine landscapes, rich culture and traditional way of life, with border tourism steadily emerging as a new attraction in the Valley.
According to the details available with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) from the picturesque valleys of Gurez to the frontier villages of Keran, Machil, Tangdhar and Uri, tourists are increasingly venturing beyond Kashmir’s conventional destinations, seeking quieter locations that offer a blend of natural beauty, local traditions and rural hospitality.
Officials said sustained efforts by the tourism department and the Indian Army to promote these offbeat destinations through tourism events and outreach programmes have helped bring them onto Kashmir’s tourism map.
Unlike the Valley’s established tourist resorts, the border villages offer visitors an opportunity to stay with local families, savour traditional cuisine, witness indigenous customs and experience a slower pace of life, residents said.
The growing tourist footfall has begun creating new livelihood opportunities, with locals opening homestays, restaurants, transport services and small businesses catering to visitors.
Nazeer Ahmad, a resident of Gurez, said tourists are drawn to the simplicity of life and the area’s unique cultural identity.
“They come here to experience something different. Our traditions, hospitality and natural surroundings leave a lasting impression on visitors,” he said.
He, however, stressed the need for improved infrastructure and better tourism facilities to sustain the sector’s growth.
Mohammad Ismail from Karnah said the rise in tourist arrivals had brought renewed economic activity to the region, with many families now directly benefiting from tourism.
Abdul Gaffar, a resident of Uri, said border villages possess immense tourism potential and called for greater investment in infrastructure to further strengthen the sector.
“Our homes are open to visitors, and we welcome every initiative that helps develop these areas while creating opportunities for local people,” he said. (KNO)
