Bandipora, August 10: The Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, Monday commenced a two-day Integrated Communication and Outreach Programme (ICOP) on Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan at Government Higher Secondary School, Gadakhud, Sumbal, Bandipora.
The programme, as per PIB statement, was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Bandipora, Indu Kanwal Chib.
The inaugural session witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, teachers, parents, officials and members of the local community. Resource persons from the Health, Social Welfare, School Education, Police and District Administration departments sensitised participants about the causes and consequences of substance abuse, as well as measures related to prevention, treatment, counselling and rehabilitation.
Welcoming the participants, Naseer Ahmad Rather, Field Publicity Officer, CBC Srinagar, highlighted the role of CBC in disseminating information on flagship programmes and welfare initiatives of the Government of India. He emphasised the importance of timely awareness and community participation in addressing the growing challenge of substance abuse and underlined the role of parents and teachers in identifying early signs of addiction among youth.
Addressing the gathering, Deputy Commissioner Bandipora, Indu Kanwal Chib, reiterated the district administration’s commitment to combating drug abuse and trafficking. She urged young people to channelise their energies towards education, sports and other constructive pursuits, while stressing that awareness, prevention, counselling, rehabilitation and collective social responsibility are essential components of the fight against drugs.
Shri Shahid Mohammad Lone, Field Publicity Officer, CBC Anantnag, reaffirmed CBC’s commitment to taking the message of a drug-free society to schools, villages and communities through sustained outreach activities. He called for a united effort by all stakeholders to address the menace of substance abuse.
Chief Education Officer Bandipora, M. Rafiq Mir, highlighted the importance of education and a supportive environment in shaping responsible and informed youth. Station House Officer, Sumbal, Mohammad Saleem Mir, briefed participants on the role of law enforcement in curbing drug trafficking and explained relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Dr. Reyaz Ahmad, Medical Officer, spoke about the adverse health consequences of substance abuse and highlighted the importance of counselling and timely intervention. He also informed participants about the Government of India’s Tele-MANAS mental health support initiative and helpline 14416. Tehsil Social Welfare Officer, Sumbal, Shri Fayaz Ahmad Lone, elaborated on welfare and support mechanisms available for affected individuals and families.
The programme featured a photo exhibition on Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, cultural performances by empanelled cultural troupes, and student participation in speech, painting and quiz competitions aimed at promoting awareness about the dangers of drug abuse.
The participants also administered a pledge to stay away from drugs, discourage drug trafficking and contribute towards building a Drug-Free Jammu & Kashmir and Drug-Free India.
