Threat To KP Employees Needs Immediate Action

The fresh terror threats to Kashmiri Pandit employees, accompanied by the online leak of their personal details, are a direct assault on the dignity and security of a community that has already endured decades of displacement and violence. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has rightly termed this a matter of serious concern. But concern alone is not enough. What is needed is immediate, decisive action. The threat letter names employees recruited under the Prime Minister’s Special Package and includes confidential information such as residential addresses, vehicle numbers, and phone numbers. This is a calculated attempt to instil fear and disrupt the lives of those who have chosen to serve the state despite the risks. The All PM Package Employees Forum has rightly demanded a comprehensive review of security arrangements. The administration must ensure that these employees are provided robust security at their workplaces and residential accommodations. The suggestion to allow work from home as an interim measure is reasonable and must be considered. This is not the first time such threats have emerged. Two-and-a-half years ago, Kashmiri Pandit employees, including revenue official Rahul Bhat and school teacher Rajni Bala, were targeted and killed. We cannot afford to repeat that mistake. The security agencies must investigate the source of the threat and the data leak with urgency and hold those responsible accountable. The political leadership must speak with one voice on this issue. The right to work with dignity and without fear is not a privilege; it is a fundamental right. Any attempt to deny that right must be met with the full force of the law. The government must also work to restore the confidence of the affected employees, assuring them that their safety is a top priority. Those who threaten innocent citizens will not succeed. The administration must act swiftly, decisively, and with the seriousness that this situation demands. The safety and dignity of Kashmiri Pandit employees are non-negotiable.
