Interns Call Off Strike, Govt Must Now Deliver

The decision by MBBS and BDS interns across Jammu and Kashmir to call off their strike after the government provided a written assurance to resolve their stipend demand within one month is a welcome development. It demonstrates that when both sides choose dialogue over confrontation, even long-standing disputes can find a path to resolution. The interns’ demand for a hike from Rs 12,300 to Rs 30,000 was not unreasonable. They work long hours in emergency departments, wards, and operation theatres, contributing meaningfully to patient care while shouldering significant clinical responsibilities. Their argument that the existing stipend was inadequate considering inflation and the nature of their work was valid. However, their insistence on a written, time-bound commitment was equally justified. Verbal assurances, no matter how well-intentioned, rarely translate into action without accountability. The government’s willingness to provide a written assurance is a positive step. It signals that the administration recognises the legitimacy of the interns’ concerns and is willing to commit to a timeline. Health Minister Sakeena Itoo deserves credit for engaging with the interns and facilitating a resolution. The decision to call off the strike in the larger interest of patients also reflects the interns’ sense of responsibility and professionalism. However, the real test lies ahead. The government must now honour its commitment and translate the assurance into a formal decision within the promised one-month period. The interns have shown good faith by suspending their agitation. It is now the government’s turn to act. The resolution of this dispute offers a lesson for the future: when grievances are genuine and communication is transparent, even difficult issues can be resolved without disrupting essential services. Both sides have done their part. Now it is time for the government to deliver. The interns are watching—and so are the patients.
