Over 60,000 workers await regularisation, JKCDF questions delay in panel report
Srinagar, Sep 26: The Jammu and Kashmir Casual Daily Wagers Forum (JKCDF) on Saturday announced an Assembly gherao on Monday, demanding regularisation of casual and daily-rated workers.
Addressing a press conference here, JKCDF president Sajad Ahmed Parray said over 60,000 workers were awaiting regularisation and questioned the delay in the report of a government-appointed committee tasked with preparing a roadmap on the issue.
Parray said the committee was initially given six months to submit its recommendations and workers were assured that regularisation would be taken up during the current financial year. However, he said, 18 months later, the government had indicated there was no timeline for regularisation.
He said the issue was raised in the Legislative Assembly by CPI(M) MLA Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, and the government’s response had left workers disappointed.
Accusing successive governments of delaying the matter through committees, Parray said thousands of workers and their families continued to live with uncertainty despite years of service in government departments.
He said the forum would intensify its agitation and urged workers to gather outside the Legislative Assembly on Monday.
Parray also appealed to political parties and legislators to press the government for an early resolution of the issue.
Earlier, the government informed the Assembly that 1,00,501 casual and other daily-rated workers had been registered through Aadhaar-based biometric identification and skill profiling—(KNO)
