World Sight Day :  Don’t Wave Off Wavy Vision: Ophthalmologists

Srinagar, Oct 08: Prolonged exposure to smartphones, computers and other digital screens is increasingly being associated with eye strain and vision-related complaints, with ophthalmologists advising people to adopt preventive measures and undergo regular eye examinations.

Doctors said the growing dependence on digital devices has made eye health a major concern, particularly among children, elderly people and those already suffering from conditions such as diabetes and hypertension.

Ophthalmologists said continuous screen viewing requires the eyes to remain focused at a close distance for extended periods, which can result in digital eye strain, commonly known as computer vision syndrome.

They said people experiencing prolonged screen exposure may develop symptoms including blurred vision, dryness or irritation of the eyes, headaches and discomfort in the neck and shoulders.

Doctors also cautioned that children could be particularly vulnerable, with prolonged near-work and reduced outdoor activity being associated with an increased risk of developing myopia or short-sightedness at an early age.

Ophthalmologist Dr Tariq Ahmad stressed the importance of periodic eye examinations, particularly among the elderly.

He said that with increasing longevity, age-related eye disorders, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), are becoming increasingly common.

“Among elderly patients, an eye check-up every six months is necessary. Age-related macular degeneration has become more common, and its incidence has doubled over the past decade,” Dr Tariq said.

He said early detection and timely treatment remain crucial in preventing avoidable deterioration of vision. “As a general recommendation, people should undergo regular eye examinations, while children should have their eyes checked at least once a year, even when they do not have any obvious symptoms,” he said.

Another ophthalmologist, Dr Shugufta, said several major causes of vision loss and blindness can either be prevented or effectively managed if detected at an early stage.

“Refractive errors, cataract, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy are among the important causes of preventable blindness. Regular screening is therefore extremely important,” she said.

She advised people to pay attention to their diet and include green leafy vegetables, fresh fruits and nutritious sources of protein, including fish, in their daily meals.

Dr Shugufta added that people suffering from diabetes, hypertension and other systemic diseases require more frequent ophthalmic evaluation.

Ophthalmologist Dr Sajad Ahmad highlighted the rapid advances in technology and research transforming the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders.

He said developments such as gene therapy have opened new avenues for treating certain inherited eye disorders, including Leber congenital amaurosis.

“Artificial intelligence is now being used in the diagnosis of eye diseases, improving the speed and accuracy of detection,” Dr Sajad said.

He said people should not ignore changes in vision, including blurred vision, floaters, flashes, changes in night vision, redness or pain in the eyes.

Doctors advised people to reduce unnecessary screen exposure and follow the 20-20-20 rule—after every 20 minutes of screen use, look at an object around 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

They recommended adequate hydration, a nutrient-rich diet containing vitamins, antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids, and avoiding prolonged exposure to bright screens.

For children, doctors emphasised limiting recreational screen time and encouraging outdoor activities.

The experts urged the public to treat eye health as part of routine healthcare rather than waiting for vision problems to become severe before seeking medical attention—(KNO)
