Friday Brief: Raising Children with Justice

Friday Brief: Raising Children with Justice

Islam places the upbringing of children at the very heart of its moral vision. The Quran repeatedly reminds us that children are a trust (Amaanah) from Allah, and that parents will be held accountable for how they fulfil that trust. “O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire” (66:6). This verse is not merely a warning; it is a directive to raise children with care, fairness and moral purpose. Justice among children is one of the most neglected aspects of this duty. The Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) was explicit on this point. When a father favoured one child over another, the Prophet (PBUH) said, “Fear Allah and be just between your children” (Sahih al-Bukhari). In another narration, he said, “I do not like that you prefer some of your children over others, even in a gift” (Sahih Muslim). This teaching strikes at the root of favouritism, which breeds resentment, jealousy and broken families. Justice does not mean treating every child identically. It means recognising each child’s needs, temperament and potential, and responding to them with fairness. A sick child needs more attention; a struggling child needs more patience; a gifted child needs more challenge. Justice is about giving each child what they need, not necessarily what the other receives. The Prophet (PBUH) was also a model of affection. He kissed children, carried them in prayer and played with them. He said, “He who does not show mercy to our young ones is not one of us” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi). Kindness is not indulgence; it is the foundation of a secure and confident child. In a time when children face immense pressure—academic, social and digital—the Islamic model of just, loving and purposeful upbringing offers a timeless path. It calls us to balance discipline with affection, guidance with freedom, and equality with individual care. Our children are not our possessions. They are our responsibility. And justice toward them is among the purest forms of worship.
