Policing That Walks The Beat

Policing That Walks The Beat

The police station has always been the first door a common man knocks on when in trouble. If that door is dusty, slow or rude, the whole system feels distant. So, when the IGP Kashmir tells every police station to adopt SMART Policing and Digital Beat Policing, it is not just another circular. It is an attempt to change the culture of the thana itself. The five words — Strict and Sensitive, Modern and Mobile, Alert and Accountable, Reliable and Responsive, Techno-savvy and Trained — sound good on paper. But the Kashmir police chief has said the right thing: this should not stay in files. It must show in the behaviour of the constable at the counter, in how a complaint is written, in how fast someone responds to a call. What is more welcome is the push for Digital Beat Policing. For years, beat officers have been on paper only. Now if they actually visit their areas, talk to people, keep digital records and remain answerable, the police will stop being strangers to the neighbourhood. Public outreach, quick service, community participation — these are simple words but very hard to practise daily. The focus on hospitals, essential services and the last person in the last mile is also sensible. Kashmir has seen enough of fear and distance between the uniform and the citizen. Trust does not come from big announcements. It comes when a woman can walk into a police station at night and be heard with dignity. Of course, much will depend on supervision. If officers are not monitored, this will become one more slogan. But the intention is honest and the direction is right. A police station that listens is a police station that protects. Let us hope this becomes real on the ground.
