Demands Disability Commissioner, hike in monthly pension, reservation for persons with disabilities

Srinagar, Oct 21: The Jammu and Kashmir Handicapped Association on Wednesday staged a peaceful protest at Press Enclave in Srinagar, urging the government to address the long-pending demands and issues faced by persons with disabilities.

Addressing press, Association State President Abdul Rashid Bhat, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said the protest was aimed at drawing the government’s attention towards the difficulties faced by the community and seeking concrete measures for their welfare.

Bhat called for the appointment of a Disability Commissioner in Jammu and Kashmir, saying the post was essential for effectively addressing grievances and safeguarding the rights of persons with disabilities.

He also demanded an increase in the monthly disability pension to rupees 20,000–30,000, besides adequate reservation for persons with disabilities in education, employment and other sectors.

The Association president urged the government to take immediate and concrete steps to address the long-pending demands of the community and ensure the effective implementation of welfare measures for persons with disabilities.

He said the Association would continue to raise the issues of the community until their genuine demands are addressed. (KNO)
