Friday Brief: Patience In The Storm

Friday Brief: Patience In The Storm

Trials are not an interruption of life; they are part of its design. The Quran is candid about this: “And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient”. The verse does not ask why hardship comes. It asks who will remain standing when it does. The answer, again and again, is the one who practices sabr. But sabr is not passive resignation. The Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him), said, “Whoever remains patient, Allah will make him patient”. It is an acquired strength, trained through repeated choice, not a mood that descends upon the fortunate. The Quran promises that those who endure will receive “their reward without account” —a measure of recompense that exceeds any ledger of human suffering. The Hadith literature is even more intimate. The Prophet (PBUH) said that no fatigue, illness, anxiety, sorrow, harm, or sadness afflicts a Muslim, “even to the extent of a thorn pricking him, without Allah wiping out his mistakes by it”. Even a thorn. The smallest wound is not wasted. This is a God who does not overlook the minor griefs that accumulate in a life. There is also a hard teaching about timing. Patience is measured at the moment of impact, not after the wound has begun to heal. That is a high standard, and an honest one. It admits that patience is hardest precisely when it is most needed. For the believer, then, trials are neither punishment nor abandonment. The Prophet (PBUH) said, “When Allah desires good for someone, He afflicts him”. And in another narration, “How wonderful is the case of a believer; there is good for him in everything… if adversity befalls him, he endures it patiently and that is better for him”. The lesson is not to seek hardship, nor to romanticise it. It is to meet it with a steadiness that neither panics nor despairs. Patience does not deny pain. It simply refuses to let pain have the final word.
