Friday Brief: Signs Of The Merciful

Friday Brief: Signs Of The Merciful

Birds appear in the Quran not as decoration but as evidence. In Surah Al-Mulk, Allah asks a question that is easy to read and hard to answer: “Do they not see the birds above them, spreading and folding their wings? None holds them up except the Most Compassionate”. The verse does not simply admire flight. It points to the One who sustains it. The use of the name “Al-Rahman” here is deliberate. The same mercy that provides for human beings holds the bird in the air. To watch a bird is to watch a sign of care. The Quran also uses birds to teach trust and humility. When Ibrahim (Peace Be Upon Him) asked to see how Allah gives life to the dead, he was commanded to take four birds and scatter them on different hills, then call them back. The lesson was not about the birds. It was about certainty of the heart. In the story of Sulaiman (Peace Be Upon Him), the hoopoe is missed at roll call and later returns with news of a whole kingdom. A small bird becomes an instrument of knowledge and guidance. In Surah Al-Fil, birds are sent against an army, carrying stones of clay. The weak creature becomes the carrier of divine justice. The Hadith literature adds a gentler dimension. The Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) warned against harming birds without right, and said that if anyone kills even a sparrow unjustly, Allah will question him about it on the Day of Judgment. He (PBUH) also said, “Settle the birds in their nests,” discouraging the pre-Islamic practice of disturbing them for omens. And in a beautiful image of the people of Paradise, he (PBUH) described hearts as soft and free of sin, “like the hearts of birds”. For the believer, these references carry a simple message. Birds are not ours to harm at will. They are signs of a mercy that holds everything in place. To notice them is to remember the One who holds us too.
