Jammu, Nov 18: The administration of Government Medical College and Sri Maharaja Gulab Singh (SMGS) hospitals on Tuesday checked the lockers belonging to staff, students and doctors.
An official told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the lockers were checked as part of a drill amid tight security arrangements. “Keys were sought from the holders. Lockers will be checked and re-allotted,” the official added.
Last week authorities conducted a locker checking exercise at the Government Medical College and SMHS Hospital, Srinagar, to identify and label the personal lockers. The circular to conduct the checking was issued by the Administrator, Associated Hospitals, Srinagar, after an AK rifle was recovered from the locker of a doctor in Anantnag.
Pertinently, a few doctors were found involved in a major terror module and the subsequent car blast near the Red Fort in Delhi on November 10, and the recovery of arms and ammunition, including an AK rifle, from the locker of a doctor at GMC Anantnag on November 8.
Notably, the investigations and the DNA test had revealed that a doctor from South Kashmir’s Pulwama district Dr Umar Mohammad carried out a suicide attack near Red Fort on November 10 by blowing off the i20. In the blast more than ten people were killed.
A few days before the blast, J&K, Haryana and UP Police had recovered a major cache of explosives, nearly 2,900 kg during a raid in Faridabad. Initially two Kashmiri-origin doctors were detained from Al Falah University in connection with that operation. “Dr Umar was associated with those arrested and may have gone ahead with the attack fearing imminent arrest,” an official had said.
On November 14, the National Medical Commission (NMC) removed four doctors from the Indian Medical Register (IMR) and National Medical Register (NMR) with immediate effect following their involvement in a case registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
The doctors removed includes Dr. Muzaffar Ahmad (Reg. No. 14680/2017), Dr. Adeel Ahmad Rather (Reg. No. 15892/2019), Dr. Muzamil Shakeel (Reg. No. 15130/2018), and Dr. Shaheen Saeed (Reg. No. 45961/2022).
The Jammu & Kashmir Medical Council had already cancelled the registrations of Dr. Ahmad, Dr. Rather, and Dr. Shakeel based on evidence shared by investigating agencies.
Dr. Saeed, registered with the Uttar Pradesh Medical Council, was removed through a separate NMC order. The removal followed FIR No. 162/2025, lodged at Nowgam Police Station in Srinagar on October 19, under multiple sections of the UAPA, including provisions relating to unlawful activities, terrorist acts, raising funds, recruitment, and harbouring.
The NMC said the conduct of the doctors was “prima facie inconsistent with the standards of ethical propriety, integrity and public trust” required under the Indian Medical Council (Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations, 2002.
The order states that the four individuals “shall cease to practice medicine or hold any medical appointment till further orders”. All State Medical Councils have been instructed to enforce the directive. (KNO)
