SRINAGAR, NOVEMBER 20: The Department of Biochemistry, Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar, and its associated SMHS Hospital, in collaboration with the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) and the Quality Council of India (QCI), organised a day-long Awareness Programme on “NABL Accreditation for Medical Laboratories” Thursday.

This significant event marked a crucial step toward strengthening quality healthcare in Jammu & Kashmir.

The inaugural ceremony was graced by guests, including Principal/Dean, GMC Srinagar, Prof. Iffat Hassan;  Deputy Director, Health Services Kashmir, Dr. Nighat;  Administrator, GMC & Associated Hospitals Mohammad Ashraf Hakak and other officers.

Principal/Dean, GMC Srinagar, emphasized the importance of accreditation in ensuring quality healthcare. He stated, “Accreditation is a hallmark of excellence in healthcare, and I commend the Department of Biochemistry for taking the lead in pursuing NABL accreditation. This initiative will not only enhance the credibility of our laboratory services but also foster a culture of quality and excellence in our institution.”

Director NABL, Mallika Gope, delivered the keynote address, outlining the national vision for strengthening laboratory quality systems. She stated, “NABL accreditation is a mark of excellence that ensures laboratories adhere to international standards of quality and competence. I am confident that this initiative will have a ripple effect in promoting quality laboratory services across the region.”

Joint Director NABL, led detailed technical sessions on ISO 15189:2022 requirements, documentation, M(EL)T Lab processes, and the online accreditation workflow. These sessions provided valuable insights to the participants on the accreditation process and the importance of adhering to international standards.

Head of the Department of Biochemistry, GMC Srinagar, emphasized the significance of NABL accreditation, stating, “NABL accreditation is not just a certificate; it is a commitment to excellence”. She highlighted the need for continuous quality improvement, structured training, and professional accountability to motivate more laboratories across J&K to adopt accreditation standards.

The event aimed to accelerate the adoption of accreditation practices across healthcare institutions, paving the way for more standardized, accurate, and patient-centric laboratory services in the years ahead.

By organizing this awareness programme, GMC Srinagar and its partners sought to promote a culture of quality and excellence in laboratory services, ultimately benefiting patients and the broader healthcare community in Jammu & Kashmir.
