Srinagar, Nov 20: E-rickshaw operators in Srinagar have strongly opposed the RTO’s recent decision declaring Moulana Azad Road (Jehangir Chowk to J&K Bank HQ) and Residency Road (Hari Singh High Street to J&K Bank HQ) as “No e-Rickshaw Zones,” calling it “unjust” and a direct threat to their livelihoods.
Arshid Ahmad Bhat, President of the E-Rickshaw Union Kashmir said, the decision is unfair and would directly impact the daily earnings of thousands of drivers.
He said they are with the government over regulation of traffic congestion in Srinagar city, but condemn this move. “If a road is being closed, the authorities should at least allow e-rickshaws on alternate routes like Residency Road. Thousands of families depend on these vehicles for their daily income, this sudden restriction is unjust and harsh,” he said.
Earlier, the RTO announced the ban following its meeting on November 13, 2025, citing the need to ensure smoother traffic flow in high-density areas often slowed by frequent e-rickshaw stoppages. The official notification warned that any violation of the order would invite action under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and related rules.
While authorities said the measure will decongest key commercial stretches, e-rickshaw drivers say it disproportionately affects small transport operators who provide essential last-mile connectivity in the city. “We support efforts to regulate traffic, but banning access without offering alternatives is unreasonable and harmful to us,” Bhat added.
Moreover, the E-rickshaw operators have urged the administration to reconsider the order and work toward a balanced policy that safeguards both traffic management and the livelihoods of local drivers—(KNO)
