SRINAGAR, DECEMBER 3: The Department of Social Welfare Wednesday observed the International Day of Persons with Disabilities by organising a special programme at Abhedananda Home, Solina Rambagh, Srinagar.

This year’s global theme, “Fostering Disability-Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress,” guided the day’s proceedings.

Commissioner Secretary, Social Welfare Department, Sarmad Hafeez was the chief guest on the occasion.

In his address, the Commissioner Secretary reaffirmed the department’s commitment towards building an inclusive society where every individual can live with dignity, access their rights and enjoy equal opportunities. He highlighted several ongoing government initiatives aimed at addressing the needs and aspirations of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), emphasizing the goal of empowerment, socio-economic upliftment and social integration. “Inclusion is not charity; it is a fundamental right,” he stated, calling for collective action to dismantle physical, social and attitudinal barriers that limit the opportunities for persons with disabilities.

During the programme, Sarmad Hafeez engaged in an interactive session with the staff, management, students and parents. He asked the staff to work with renewed dedication and compassion.

The Commissioner Secretary also felicitated “15” Distinction Holders and staff members with Appreciation Certificates in recognition of their outstanding academic achievements and service.

A series of cultural activities were presented by the students of Abhedananda Home, including the National Anthem in Indian Sign Language, various cultural performances, a Ladakhi song in Sign Language and a play depicting inclusivity and talent.

Prominent speakers, including Shabir Khan, SP South, and Dr Khair-un-Nisa, Chairperson CWC Srinagar, delivered insightful deliberations on the protection of rights of persons with disabilities under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act, 2016.

Other dignitaries present included the Director, Social Welfare Kashmir, District Social Welfare Officer, Srinagar, Principal BHSS Jawahar Nagar, among others.

The event concluded with a collective call to action, urging all stakeholders to work together to build a more inclusive, accessible and equitable society.

Following the programme, the Commissioner Secretary inspected the infrastructure and facilities at Abhedananda Home to assess requirements for further improvements, ensuring enhanced care and quality education for specially-abled students.
