Srinagar, Dec 05: Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Friday informed Lok Sabha that Jammu & Kashmir has recorded a persistent rise in cancer cases over the last five years.

As per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and National Cancer Registry Programme (NCRP), the estimated number of cancer cases in J&K has increased from 12,726 cases in 2020 to 14,112 cases in 2024, marking an upward trend every year.

As per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the official data states that J&K reported 13,060 cancer cases in 2021 followed by 13,395 in 2022 and 13,744 cases in 2023—reflecting an average annual rise of around 3 percent.

The union government informed the House that multiple technology-driven mechanisms for early detection and treatment are already in place under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD). “This includes screening facilities, NCD clinics and District Day Care Cancer Centres.”

Additionally, cancer treatment services have been approved in all new AIIMS institutes that cover diagnostic, medical and surgical care.

Under the Union Budget 2025–26, the Government has also approved over 200 new Day Care Cancer Centres (DCCCs) across the country to strengthen access to cancer care. (KNO)
