Srinagar, Dec 06 (KNO): Director SDRF Kashmir, Imtiyaz Hussain, on Saturday lauded the exemplary courage and selfless service of volunteers and first responders during disasters and acts of terror.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 63rd Raising Day of Home Guards and Civil Defence in Srinagar, the Director said that the occasion is not only to commemorate the formation of these forces but also to honour the courage and dedication of individuals who rise to the occasion during disasters and acts of terror. “Their actions inspire us all to stand united in the face of any challenge,” Director Hussain said.

He said that despite risking their lives, these individuals helped with rescue efforts amid chaos and destruction. “Each of them was awarded Rs 10,000 and a commendation certificate by DGP A.G. Mir.”

The Director also expressed gratitude to all volunteers and civilians who contributed to rescue operations, particularly during the Pahalgam terror attack.

He emphasized the importance of collective courage and community response in times of disaster, urging everyone to emulate the dedication shown by these heroes.

“At times of disaster and challenge, we should all rise to the occasion and display the commitment demonstrated by these individuals not only for Kashmir but for the entire nation,” he said.

The celebrations also featured the reading of messages from the President of India, the Union Home Minister and other dignitaries, along with a grand parade. Civil Defence Wardens, Chief Wardens, volunteers from across Kashmir and numerous civilians attended the event.

The awardees included Syed Nazakat Shah, a civilian from Anantnag, who rescued a tourist family during the Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 tourists lost their lives. Shah was presented a cash prize of Rs 10,000 and a commendation certificate for his bravery and prompt action.

The event also honoured the courage of three civilians from Nowgam who acted as first responders during the recent accidental explosion at a local police station—(KNO)
