New Delhi, Dec 17: 249 post offices are currently functioning across Jammu and Kashmir, with the majority catering to rural areas, the government said.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, the Ministry of Communications said, 147 post offices are operational in the Jammu region, while 102 post offices fall under the Srinagar headquarters region.

To make the postal services strong in Jammu and Kashmir, the setting up of a new Sub-Post Office in Jammu and Kashmir is being proposed by the government in the upcoming year.

While talking about staff infrastructure, the Ministry said that eight residential colonies for postal employees are available in J&K, including five in Jammu and three in Srinagar. Adding further, it said that the existing facilities are adequate to meet the requirements.

The Ministry further added that in Jammu and Kashmir, postal services are strengthened by a nationwide network of over 1.64 lakh post offices, which ensures connectivity and village-level coverage across the country, including the Union Territory—(KNO)
