Srinagar, Dec 18: Seventeen-year-old Nasir Aijaz Sufi from Sempora area of Sopore has brought laurels to Jammu and Kashmir by clinching a bronze medal at the ISF World School Volleyball Championship held recently in Shangluo, China.

Nasir, the only participant from J&K to represent India in the global event, was part of the team competing under the banner of the School Games Federation of India (SGFI). The championship was held from December 4 to 13, featuring teams from 20 countries.

An opposite hitter by position, Nasir developed a love for volleyball at a young age, inspired by his elder brother, who also played the game. “It was bronze today, but it will be gold for Jammu and Kashmir next time,” he told said, expressing his determination to strive for greater success in future tournaments.

Having risen through the ranks from zonal to district, state, national and now international level, Nasir credits his accomplishment to his family, teachers and coaches. “It was not an easy task, being the only player selected from the valley,” he added.

His family expressed overwhelming pride at his achievement, saying they always supported and encouraged him.

Similarly, villagers also hailed Nasir as a source of inspiration for the youth of the valley.

Altaf Hussain Mir, chairman of Nasir’s school, praised his dedication, saying, “He was a talented boy, and we always saw a spark in him.”

The feat marks a historic moment in J&K’s sports history, placing Indian school volleyball on the global map through the team’s maiden appearance at the prestigious championship—(KNO)
