Srinagar, Dec 20: Urging people to follow safety advisories, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Anshul Garg, on Saturday called for greater caution during the winter season to prevent fire incidents.

He also appreciated Kashmiri artisans for preserving the region’s centuries-old craft traditions while creatively blending them with modern aesthetics.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of Pheran Day – Jashn-e-Chillai Kalan celebrations held at Kashmir Haat, Srinagar, Divisional Commissioner Garg said that in view of the rising number of fire incidents during winters, the public must adhere strictly to the Fire Prevention Advisory issued by the administration.

“We have seen several unfortunate incidents recently. People should audit their winter appliances and ensure electric devices are turned off when not in use,” Div Com Garg said.

Highlighting the administration’s winter preparedness, he said the Integrated Command and Control Centre and district-level control rooms are functioning round the clock. “All DCs have established control rooms and nodal officers have been deployed to ensure uninterrupted power supply, snow clearance, and essential services,” he said.

The event also marked the 40th anniversary of Kashmiri Artisans’ Day, underscoring the continuing vibrancy of the Valley’s traditional craftsmanship.

“The traditional attire of Kashmir and our handicrafts are a reflection of our warmth and aesthetics. All the artisans who are with us today deserve a lot of credit for keeping this legacy alive while adapting to changing times,” he said.

He also congratulated the Department of Handicrafts and Handlooms for organising regular initiatives to promote local artisans, including festivals, exhibitions, and new marketing platforms. “The department has been proactive in giving artisans exposure and opportunities, especially ahead of the winter and tourist seasons,” he said, adding that the administration is working on the ‘local for local’ concept to strengthen Kashmir’s craft economy.

Inviting visitors to witness the two-day exhibition at Kashmir Haat, the Div Com said such events not only celebrate Kashmir’s heritage but also connect artisans directly with buyers and tourists. He also expressed satisfaction over the growing participation of youth in the handicrafts and handloom sector.

The event, inaugurated by the Div Com, witnessed vibrant cultural performances and artisan stalls showcasing traditional pherans, blankets and other winter handicrafts. It was attended by Director Handicrafts & Handloom Mussarat Zia, senior officers, artisans, and people from different walks of life—(KNO)
