Gulmarg, Dec 31: Kashmir’s tourism industry is witnessing a strong revival and is set for a major leap in the coming years, Director Tourism Kashmir Syed Qamar Sajad said on Wednesday, as the region continues to host a record number of visitors amid the ongoing winter season.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the seven-day Winter Carnival in Gulmarg, the Director, anticipated a “mega upcoming year” for Kashmir’s tourism sector and all those associated with it. “We are currently witnessing a major tourist footfall in the Valley, and we hope this momentum continues in the times ahead,” he said.

The Director also announced the revival and integration of an advanced skiing course across four major destinations—Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, and Doodhpathri (subject to site opening). “We have started an integrated skiing program covering these main spots, equipped with drag lifts. Around 200 students are being trained to nurture local talent and help Jammu and Kashmir shine at national and international platforms,” he added.

The winter carnival, inaugurated with the participation of MLA Gulmarg, Farooq Ahmad Shah and senior officials from the Tourism Department, features a series of recreational and cultural events, including snow cricket, skiing, musical evenings and local art displays, showcasing the Valley’s diverse culture and festive spirit.

Highlighting that tourism in Kashmir has bounced back strongly after a brief slowdown, the Director added that continuous infrastructure upgrades and new initiatives are being implemented to provide tourists with a seamless experience. “Our focus is on quality services, safety and developing sustainable tourism models that benefit both locals and visitors,” he said.

Reiterating the department’s commitment to promoting peace through tourism, the Director said the Valley’s snow-covered peaks and tranquil landscapes send a powerful message of harmony and togetherness. “We urge people across the country to visit and witness the Valley’s beauty, peace and the warmth of its people,” he added—(KNO)
