Ladakh, Sep 09 (KNO): Three soldiers of Army’s Mahar Regiment, including two Agniveers, were killed after an avalanche hit the Siachen glacier in Ladakh on Tuesday, officials said.

An official told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the soldiers were trapped under snow for nearly five hours before rescue teams reached the spot.

An Army Captain, who was also caught in the avalanche, was rescued.

Ladakh-based Army’s Fire and Fury Corps, in a post on X, said: “GOC, Fire and Fury Corps and all ranks salute Sepoy Mohit Kumar, Agniveer Niraj Kumar Choudhary and Agniveer Dabhi Rakesh Devabhai, who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty in Siachen on 9 September 2025, and offer deepest condolences to the bereaved families.”

The Siachen Glacier, located at an altitude of nearly 20,000 feet on the northern tip of the Line of Control, is considered the world’s highest battlefield. Temperatures here often dip to minus 60 degrees Celsius, and avalanches remain a constant threat to soldiers deployed in the area.

In 2021, two soldiers lost their lives after an avalanche struck sub-sector Haneef in Siachen. In 2019, four soldiers and two porters were killed when an avalanche hit their patrol near a post at 18,000 feet—(KNO)
