Raja Syed Rather

Srinagar, Oct 08: Secretary Health and Medical Education, Jammu and Kashmir, Syed Abid Rasheed on Wednesday addressed the newly admitted MBBS batch at the Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar, delivering an inspiring message centered on dedication, compassion, discipline and lifelong learning in the medical profession.

Sharing a personal anecdote from his student life, Syed Abid said, “To motivate myself, I used to come and stand outside the gate of GMC Srinagar and tell myself that one day I will enter this institution as a doctor. Though I was eventually sent to Chennai, not getting GMC Srinagar remained one of my biggest regrets. So, I feel happy, proud and blessed to be part of this institution.”

Calling the beginning of medical education a “monumental and transformative journey,” he told the students that the profession comes with immense responsibility. “You will face challenges and deal with human life, fighting death and disease every single day. But this will also be the most satisfying and beautiful journey of your life,” he said.

Emphasizing the core values that define the medical field, the Secretary said that empathy, compassion, and continuous learning are the pillars of good medical practice. “The medical profession is not like any other. You must feel the pain of others, show compassion, and most importantly, never stop learning. Lifelong learning is what makes a great doctor,” he remarked.

Urging students to uphold academic excellence and professional competence, he noted, “You might be a great singer, dancer, or debater, but patients do not need any of those skills. They need a competent and knowledgeable doctor. What the mind does not know, the eyes do not see.”

Syed Abid advised the new batch to remain focused, disciplined, and dedicated to their studies. “As doctors, your core value system from today onwards must revolve around study, study, and more study. That is what will make you capable of serving humanity with skill and compassion,” he said—(KNO)
