MLA Tanvir moves Private Member’s Bill to restore original ‘Land Grants Act’

KT News Desk

Srinagar, Oct 09: National Conference (NC) Chief Spokesperson and MLA Zadibal Tanveer Sadiq Thursday reaffirmed the party’s commitment to provide genuine relief to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

On the occasion, he announced that, as part of this effort, the National Conference has already introduced the “Land Grants (Restoration and Protection) Bill” in the Assembly, seeking to nullify the 2022 amendments and reinstate the 1960 Act to ensure extension of leases for local leaseholders.

According to Tanvir, the Bill is designed to safeguard the rights of existing leaseholders, protect local businesses, and ensure that government land continues to serve the people of Jammu and Kashmir rather than speculative or non-local interests. “Any change in land policy must emanate from the elected Assembly not through unilateral administrative orders,” he said.

Speaking to the media, Tanviir said, “Our intention is clear, it’s to protect the rights of the poor, small traders, and local businessmen. I have already introduced a private member’s bill in the Assembly to restore leases and safeguard people’s land. The PDP’s press conference on this issue is nothing but political drama.”

He emphasized that no bill or resolution meant for the Assembly can be publicized before being tabled. “While we quietly worked for the people, PDP chose to create noise for attention. We act while they act out,” he said.

Responding to statements made by PDP President Mehbooba Mufti and opposition leader Sunil Sharma, Sadiq said both the PDP and BJP appear to be following the same script.

“Yesterday’s press conferences by PDP and BJP show they receive dictation from the same place. Their language and tone are identical. They no longer sound like opposition parties, but like spokespersons of the LG administration.”

Condemning the LoP’s attempt to link the restoration of statehood to civilian killings, Tanvir called the remarks “deeply unfortunate and insensitive.”

“It is shocking that opposition leaders would politicize tragedy. This exposes the BJP and its proxies, who are working hand-in-glove to divert attention from real issues,” he added.
