Srinagar, Oct 24: Jammu and Kashmir’s medal tally at both national and international events has improved in recent years, with the sports scene witnessing a steady growth as more youth take up sports as a serious career option.

Divisional Sports Officer, J&K Sports Council, Javid-Ur-Rehman said the change is the result of continuous efforts to identify and nurture young athletes across all districts.

“The J&K Sports Council has remained focused on nurturing the talent of students along with their academic needs. The results are evident. Our medal tally continues to rise at national and international levels”, he said.

He said that the 6th edition of the Khelo India Winter Games will be held in Gulmarg, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently described as the winter sports capital of India in his Mann Ki Baat program. The event will bring together athletes from across the country to compete in various snow and ice sports. Javid said the dates will be announced soon.

Rehman said that earlier, sports activities in Jammu and Kashmir were largely limited to urban areas, but the government has extended its reach to rural and border regions. “The only gap was the lack of a platform. Over the past few years, sports infrastructure has been built in rural belts as well so that young talent can emerge from every corner,” he added.

At present, 55 sports associations are recognised by the J&K Sports Council, each working to promote a specific discipline and scout for new talent.

“Sport is not just leisure; it is a career-building path. What matters most is finding the right platform,” the officer said.

“The youth of Jammu and Kashmir have immense talent, and it is our responsibility to provide them with opportunities,” Javid said, encouraging young athletes to pursue sports with dedication.

The Khelo India Winter Games have already completed five successful editions, with Gulmarg becoming a consistent host for the event—(KNO)
