Srinagar, Oct 29: The Jammu and Kashmir government has informed the Legislative Assembly that 40 individual bunkers have been completed so far in the border villages of Uri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, while 162 more are expected to be completed within the next four weeks.

According to a reply to a starred question tabled by MLA Dr. Sajjad Shafi, the Department of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj said that the construction of bunkers is primarily the prerogative of the Home Department.

It says, however, out of 202 sanctioned individual bunkers or overhead protection trenches for border villages of Uri, 40 have been completed.

The department said that there is currently no proposal under consideration for the construction of additional bunkers in uncovered villages of the constituency.

It added that a four-week timeline has been fixed for the completion of the remaining 162 bunkers. The cost per bunker has been calculated at Rs 0.55 lakh, with Rs 0.51 lakh funded under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and rupees 0.04 lakh provided under MGNREGA for the labour component.

The reply further mentioned that the work is being carried out in convergence mode between SDRF and MGNREGA schemes—(KNO)
