Varsity likely to start functioning from April next year: CM Omar

Srinagar, Oct 29: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said that the National Law University (NLU) in Jammu and Kashmir is expected to start functioning from April next year.

Speaking in the Assembly over the resolution brought by MLA Bandipora, Nizamuddin Bhat, CM Omar, as per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said, “The government intends to set up the National Law University (NLU) in J&K as the grant of Rs 50 crore has already been kept for it.”

As the House passed the resolution, the Chief Minister said, “We expect the classes at the university to start from April next year. Although there has been no decision on the location yet, I have asked my colleagues to identify an apt place for the varsity,” he added.

The Chief Minister said that the Chief Justice of the J&K High Court and the Chief Secretary will be taken on board while finalizing the location of the university.

He said that the government will not make any discrimination as far as the establishment of the National Law University is concerned. However, he said that “at present, we have a space available in Ompura, Budgam, which is lying vacant. We have an option to come up with the varsity there as well.”

Earlier, Bhat brought the resolution in the House to seek establishment of Jammu and Kashmir National Law University. MLA Sonawari Hilal Akbar Lone moved an amendment proposing that the varsity be established in his constituency. However, later he withdrew his proposal.

MLA Bandipora’s resolution was passed through a voice vote in the House. (KNO)
