Srinagar, Oct 30: The Jammu and Kashmir Government Thursday said that the establishment of a National Law University (NLU) in the Union Territory is under active consideration, with a budget provision of Rs 50 crore already kept for the purpose.

In a written reply to an unstarred question tabled by MLA Reyaz Ahmad Khan, the Department of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs informed that the proposal to establish NLU in J&K aims to drive legal education reforms and research in line with Bar Council of India standards and other regulatory bodies.

The government said that the Hon’ble Chief Minister, in the 2025 Budget speech, had already announced the establishment of a National Law University in the Union Territory.

A high-level committee headed by Shantmanu (IAS), Financial Commissioner (Additional Chief Secretary), Higher Education Department, and comprising the Secretary Law, Director Colleges J&K, and HOD Law, University of Kashmir, has examined various aspects related to setting up the NLU.

The committee studied the functioning of similar NLUs established in other States and UTs, including factors such as land and infrastructure, faculty, hostel accommodation, admission process, and fee structure. Its report has been submitted and is presently under active consideration of the government.

The department added that the government is committed to establishing the first-ever National Law University in Jammu and Kashmir soon—(KNO)
