Power troubles in Kangan to ease with new facility

Power troubles in Kangan to ease with new facility

Ganderbal, Nov 17: Kangan is all set to get its first dedicated electricity transformer repair facility, which is expected to significantly ease the burden on both residents and Power Development Department (PDD) employees.

The project, which is in its final stages, is likely to be completed by the end of December, officials said.

For years, Ganderbal district has relied on a single PDD workshop where damaged transformers, mostly affected during winters due to heavy load in villages, were repaired.

With only one facility catering to the entire district, the workshop in Ganderbal often came under immense pressure. Mechanics reportedly handled dozens of faulty transformers at a time, causing delays of up to a week and leaving many areas without electricity for extended periods.

To overcome these recurring challenges, the PDD initiated the construction of an additional transformer repair workshop in Kangan. The estimated cost of the project is around Rs 79.16 lakh and the structure is now nearly 70% complete.

Speaking to KNO, AEE PDD Sub-Division Kangan, Er Farooq Ahmad Raina, said the new workshop is being built about one kilometre from the sub-division office, near Margund, Kangan.

“We were in dire need of this workshop for the Kangan sub-division,” he said, adding that “whenever a transformer would get damaged, it took extra time to transport it to Ganderbal and bring it back. The divisional workshop there is already overloaded during winters, which delayed repairs further.”

Raina added that the new facility, once completed, will help reduce repair time, improve service delivery, and ease the workload on the district workshop—(KNO)
