Night temps witness marginal rise in J&K, fog persists

Srinagar, Dec 15: Minimum temperatures across several parts of Jammu and Kashmir recorded a marginal rise on Monday compared to the previous day, though cold conditions continued in many areas, particularly in the Kashmir and Ladakh region, officials said.

According to the details available with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) in the Kashmir region, Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of 1.9 degrees Celsius, slightly lower than Sunday’s 2.0 degrees Celsius.

Qazigund saw a notable rise, with temperature settling at 2.2 degrees Celsius compared to 0.8 degrees Celsius a day earlier, while Pahalgam recorded 2.2 degrees Celsius against 2.4 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

Kupwara also witnessed a slight increase, with the mercury at 1.6 degrees Celsius compared to 1.2 degrees Celsius previously.

Kokernag recorded a minimum of 2.4 degrees, Celsius up from 0.8 degrees Celsius while Gulmarg registered 1.0 degree Celsius, marginally lower than Sunday’s 1.4 degrees Celsius.

Pampore cooled slightly to 0.5 degrees Celsius from 1.0 degrees Celsius. Srinagar Airport recorded a minimum of 1.4 degrees Celsius, up from 0.6 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

Awantipora remained below freezing at minus 0.8 degrees Celsius, compared to minus 0.2 degrees Celsius a day earlier. Shopian also dipped below freezing at minus 0.1 degrees Celsius.

Bandipora recorded a sharp rise to 2.7 degrees Celsius from 1.3 degrees Celsius, and Ganderbal settled at 2.3 degrees Celsius compared to 1.0 degree on Sunday.

In the Jammu region, temperatures largely remained stable. Jammu city recorded an unchanged minimum of 11.4 degrees Celsius, while Jammu Airport registered a slight rise to 11.6 degrees Celsius from 11.3 degrees Celsius.

Banihal recorded 3.1 degrees Celsius, whereas Batote recorded a marginal increase to 8.3 degrees Celsius from 7.9 degrees Celsius. Katra saw a slight dip to 10.7 degrees Celsius from 11.2 degrees.

In Ladakh, temperatures rose significantly compared to Sunday. Leh recorded a minimum of minus 1.8 degrees Celsius, up from minus 5.0 degrees, while Kargil improved to minus 1.2 degrees Celsius from minus 4.6 degrees.

Nubra Valley recorded minus 0.1 degrees Celsius compared to minus 1.8 degrees Celsius a day earlier.

The Meteorological Department said there is nothing significant expected till December 20.

Light rain or snowfall is possible at scattered places in the Kashmir region and isolated areas of Jammu division on December 21.

From December 22 to 25, weather is likely to remain partly cloudy, turning generally cloudy on December 26. Shallow to moderate fog is expected to continue at many places, officials added. (KNO)
